Lakshadweep is the tiniest Union Territory in the Indian Peninsula. It can be described as a cluster of idyllic islands lying scattered in the Arabian Sea,200-400 kilometers off Kerala Coast. People from the northern part of Kerala, usually referred to as Malabar, migrated to these islands in the early centuries of the Christian era. They speak the Malayalam language and are classified as Scheduled Tribes. They are Muslims following the Shafi School of Jurisprudence. According to 2001 Census, the population of the islands is 60,595. 72.80 percent of them are literates. Because of their long isolation from the mainland, modernity and the development programmers started reaching the islands only very late. Organized attempts have therefore become essential to take them to the forefront in all spheres of life especially in the field of education, culture, science and technology etc.
